REVIEW: WandaVision, Season 1 Episode One 'Filmed Before A Live Studio Audience'
Besides Black Widow, WandaVision has been the MCU project I've been the most excited for since Endgame, purely because the trailers gave so little away and so it felt like anything could happen.
And what we did get in this first episode....did not disappoint.
This episode is the most unusual superhero story I have ever witnessed in any medium, and I mean that in a good way. It is so unique, so different and so experimental that it feels so fresh and original, and you're just hooked trying to work out what the hell is even going on.
That dinner scene, without spoiling it for those who haven't watched, is so unsettling because it really creates this foreboding atmosphere out of the whole unusual nature of what occurs. Something is clearly up, and it uses a trick seen in many Steven Moffat episodes of Doctor Who where it brings up something seemingly trivial and repeats it numerous times for dramatic effect. In fact, this could have very easily been a Moffat script. It really is that clever.
Aside from that, I just really adore the attention to detail. As someone with a degree in Film and Television, I really appreciate all the little details, like the cheesy titles, the aspect ratio, the theme tune, the way the picture is not only black and white but slightly grainy, the way they slightly alter the sound to make it sound like it was made in the 50s, and even the way the set looks so artificial, like it actually is a sitcom set. There's even a fake advert! And the comedy is genuinely really funny. I laughed out loud so many times, particularly at the ironic one liners about Vision (Paul Bettany) secretly being an android whilst he was disguised as a human, and the way Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) uses her magic to cook the meal. I'm really intrigued with the ending to this episode too, which raises so many questions. Is Wanda in control of this facade? What happened to Mr Hart (Fred Melamed)? Why did Vision only act when Wanda told him to? These are all queries I cannot wait to find the answers to. Whatever happens, WandaVision promises to be one hell of a ride.
